Occoquan Boat Club Updates Page

Dear Members,

We will be holding the annual membership meeting on Saturday, March 22, at 12:00 pm. At this meeting, we will provide a financial overview of 2007's operating performance including a detailed review of HOTO, recap recent club equipment acquisitions, discuss future purchases and elect new club officers.

Many officer positions will become available in 2008, including the Presidency. It's been a pleasure to serve as the Club's President over the past two years. We've made great strides forward as a club but there is still much room for additional improvements. I'm looking forward to turning over the reins to somebody who can bring a fresh new perspective to the leadership committee. The Club is in great shape from a financial point of view and with the acquisitions we've made over the past couple of seasons, we have one of the best club fleets on the east coast - most of which was made possible by current and previous club members and the tremendous success we've had with the HOTO. I'm happy to help during the transition in any way that I can.

So if running a rowing club is something that you have always dreamt of, now is your chance to take over a great club and help us get to the next level.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the membership meeting on the 22nd.

Rob

NEW SEASON UPDATE

All,

I just got the following email (pasted below) from James Short. Note that our OBC insurance policy runs through 27 March. So - we can row. Bill Randall is still working the insurance stuff for most of 2008, but this gives us a month for right now. Rob & Bill - thanks much for helping get us out on the water.

Yet another reminder on the cold weather rules. If water temp is below 50, or air temp below 40 (or both), then Sandy Run rule is that you must have at least two boats in close proximity. Note these could be two singles, for those of you with privately owned boats.

OBC rule - four oars on the water until 1 April - applies to OBC people rowing OBC boats. Doesn't apply to privately owned boats.

As far as I know, private boats launching from Oxford House or private docks on the Occoquan are not bound by Sandy Run rules. Please use your good common sense, though.

Marine forecast for Sunday:
NW winds 15 to 20 kt in the morning...decreasing to 5 to 10 kt in the afternoon. Waves 1 to 2 ft (on the Potomac River). Temperatures should get up to 50 degrees.

I propose we have a nice group row sometime around 1:30 PM on Sunday afternoon. Winds should be much calmer, and nice temps. Most of the doubles work (except the BBG that has broken rib). Plus we have the three larger boats. Some of you may want to row at a different time - fine with me, as long as you coordinate it. I expect to be in a privately owned boat on Sunday afternoon (either my single or a double), so will probably not be at Sandy Run. Will expect to meet up with a group on the water. For those who normally get together in groups, you can probably start working up your coordination for those.

Regards,
Rich

This was sent to the OBC membership, please contact Lina if you have questions:

To Whom It May Concern:

This morning when I arrived at the boathouse, I noticed an approximately 1cm hole in the bow of my boat. This hole was not there when I left Saturday evening, but was there when I arrived Monday morning. I know I did not cause this damage and would greatly appreciate any help you can give me in locating the person responsible.

I think the best option is to send an e-mail to the club asking this person to come forward and agree to pay for the repairs, but I do not have access to the master e-mail list.

Because Empachers are made with a honeycomb design versus standard fiberglass this is not a "cosmetic" issue and is not an easy fix just anybody can do. I'm extremely disturbed that the responsible party did not leave a note at least admitting to the situation and would like to resolve this as soon as possible. As of right now I have no choice but to race at Club Nationals this week with a damaged boat thanks to someone's carelessness.

This is not a scratch I'm talking about. It is an actual hole that has compromised the integrity of my hull. And quite frankly, I don't see how it's possible the person who did this did NOT know about the damage caused. While rowing shells are somewhat fragile it would take a significant amount of force to create this type of hole in my boat and it is certainly not something that could happen without the person responsible being aware of it.

Any help you can lend in terms of communicating with the club would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Lina Roberts

US Rowing Membership has been renewed for 2007

June 16, 2007

Dear Fellow OBC member,

Because things can get busy out on the Occoquan and we often do not get to learn much about the rowers with whom we share the facilities, I thought that you might be interested in the attached press release about the TJ boy's varsity eight heading to Henley to row in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup. My son, Dan Muir, and I are both OBC members, but he has not had much time to scull lately with their busy training schedule.

The team leaves this Saturday for Henley. If you see them out on the water practicing before then, please wish them good speed.

Jo-Ann Muir
