Using the OBC Facility and Equipment

Reserving a boat for a race or weekend? Please make sure to use our boat reservation system. Equipment is available to all OBC members in good standing and will be reserved for your use on a “first come first served” basis. The date/time your email request was sent will be considered the date/time of the request. You will be notified by email that your request has been granted. If there are any questions regarding your request you will be contacted via email or telephone immediately. Reserve your boat by clicking here.

Know the boathouse: Arriving at the park you will need to make sure you have keys to get into both the park and the boathouse. A $25 fee is required and keys can be obtained from the park ranger. The club's rolling door(the large door) uses the key that hangs inside on OBC's bulletin board.

Once inside boathouse one you will see both fixed AND moving boat storage racks for our shells. Most boats are either marked with the OBC colors or with a number designation. OBC sculling oars are located on either side of the front door, the sweep oars are in the rear of the boathouse.

Know the boats: OBC prides itself in that it offers a large range of boat choices for all of its members. All members are required to be knowledgeable of the rules regarding the use and care of all equipment.

Each of OBC's small boats has different lifting characteristics. Get help from an experienced member whenever you take out a boat that's new to you. This will prevent unnecessary damage that could quite easily put a boat out of commission before you get it in the water.

Know what boats to sign out: All boats should be checked for adequate seats, oar locks, bolts and shoes. Never use damaged equipment OR alter the rigging on any shell without prior approval. If a boat is damaged, fill out a Damage Form located next to the Sign-Out Log OR the form online.

NOTE: OBC's best racing shells, the Millenium (2x carbon hull, Tricia Smith (2x Hudson honeycomb hull) and Charlie (4+ honeycomb hull) are to be used only under the supervision of an approved OBC Coach or with the permission of the Club Racing Committee. These shells are the more fragile "set asides" for racing members.

Know the water: The best rule on the water is to always row on the right side of the reservoir. Make sure you are aware of the river and the conditions on it. There are several other programs and fisherman who may or may not know your are on the river. Keeping a good eye out in front of your is the best policy!

Please make sure yourself aware of the weather conditions at all times and any warning flags that might be posted by the ranger. Storms quite often brings a great deal of debris with it and you should pay particular attention to any floating logs as they can seriously damage the shells. Remember: Four oars on the water rule from Dec. 1 to March 31. Please do not use the singles during this period.

Know how to leave the boathouse: When returning from a row make sure to keep a close eye out for the large blue buoy in front of Sandy Run Regional Park. Departing and returning crews should always stay to the right of this buoy to prevent any collisions.

Approaching the dock you should pay particular attention to landing as the majority of damage to shells occurs at this time. Patience and moving slowly will allow you to get on the dock without incident!

Once you have pulled your boat from the water please make sure to wash it or wipe off the shell, open the drain vents and inspect the boat for any damage. Make sure you always return the shells with the bow pointing out of the boathouse and return your oars to the racks. Once completed, please make sure to sign your boat back in via the log AND if you are the only one left in the park please make sure to lock up the boathouse and park. Please be very careful not to lock out other rowers still on the water.

Have fun and drive carefully both in and outside the park!
